The concept of relationship marketing, understood as the acquisition, development, maintenance, and recovery of relationships with customers, has developed into a well-established and extensively studied research stream within the marketing domain over the last years. Numerous firms have intensified their efforts to establish long-term relationships with customers, and relationship marketing today is seen by many practitioners as a powerful resource to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Paralleling this rise of relationship marketing, the Internet has been discovered by firms and theorists alike as powerful medium for applying a wide range of marketing activities and especially the selling of products and information services. However, the integration of the relationship marketing concept and Internet-related marketing activities has remained in its infancy so far.
This special issue is targeted at improving our understanding of the linkage between relationship marketing and the Internet. The topic offers a multitude of different perspectives, such as those of traditional (i.e., offline) service companies and retailers, original online stores such as Amazon.com, or other kinds of Internet content providers (e.g., Ebay.com). Contributions should provide new insights for research and practice on (a) how the extant knowledge on relationship marketing may be effectively transferred into an Internet context, (b) how Internet-related marketing activities may be improved by the incorporation of relationship marketing knowledge, or (c) the development of new, Internet-specific relationship marketing measures. The discussion might focus on either relationship marketing strategies, concepts, or instruments. Although conceptual contributions are also welcomed, empirical papers are especially encouraged because of the current lack of empirical investigation in this field.
Topics of relevance may include, but are not limited to:
