From a promising beginning, Internet retailing (or e-tailing) has fallen short of early projections of its success, in both penetration and total sales. Despite huge media and public interest and an enormous amount of investment into online retailing, the number of successful Internet retailers remains low, and the list of online failures continues to grow. Is this a passing stage as the channel develops? Are there key lessons for prospective e-tailers from the successes and failures to date? Are there significant individual or country differences that may limit the growth of online selling to certain consumer segments, and to particular product or regional markets?
This special issue is aimed at exploring the use of the web by e-tailers and retailers to raise awareness, create preferences, build demand, and/or sell products. Lessons from empirical, case studies or theoretical analysis can hopefully provide insights into the factors that predict success in selling products on-line, and/or in using the web to boost offline sales.
