Introduction

The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in private corporations (e-Business) and governments (e-Government) has in recent years attracted a significant amount of interest from academics working in different fields. This interest has lead to an abundant number of studies discussing the advantages to be enjoyed, thanks to the adoption of ICT and the associated change in organizations and in business practice. E-business and e-government are generally viewed by scholars as two phenomena that are quite similar in nature, yet occur independently one another. As a consequence, the two are generally studied separately, though using a common background concerning research methods. Recent research has started to suggest that e-business and e-government are related indeed, and therefore ought to be studied together.

The main element supporting such relationship is the economic worth of interactions occurring between businesses and public bodies, with the latter acting as providers of services and/or as purchasers of goods and services. Moreover, the transfer of "lessons- learnt" and best practices across the two domains may be considered to be an important source of innovation for the ICT industry that caters to the needs of firms and public authorities.

In a period of economic change, these themes are remarkably relevant, since they may act as catalysts of economic and social progress in both developed and developing countries. As a matter of fact, partnerships between public and private entities have in many instances become key instruments in enabling the development of regional "ecosystems" capable of sustaining the local economy by stimulating innovation and fostering greater efficiency within industry.

This special issue of the International Journal of e-Business aims to stimulate the creation of academic papers focused on the study of relationships between e-Business and e- Government, ultimately advancing the understanding of how the process of public-private collaboration may evolve in the future and what lessons may be transferred from one context to the other.

Potential contributions may include:

  1. Papers investigating the strategy and the objectives that underlie projects involving e- business and e-government, from the perspectives of both private firms and public decision- makers.
  2. Theoretical and conceptual papers that focus on organizational change and transition processes involved in the implementation of initiatives involving e-business and e- government.
  3. Case studies of both successful and unsuccessful organizational transformations involving the implementation of E-Business/E-Government projects.
  4. Methodologies for the study of organizational change and transformation involving E- Business/E-Government initiatives.
  5. Diffusion studies on e-business and e-government, focused on the complementary nature of the two phenomena, and considering the influence of policies, institutional frameworks and socio-economics.
